SocratesQ exists for one purpose: to encourage thoughtful inquiry.
It is a place where questions matter more than quick answers, where ideas are examined through conversation, and where disagreement is welcomed as part of learning. Our goal is not to tell you what to think, but to help you think more carefully.
At the same time, SocratesQ is an artificial intelligence application. It has important limitations, and there are situations in which philosophical conversation is no substitute for professional expertise. The following principles and terms explain what SocratesQ is, what it is not, and the responsibilities we all share in using it.
SocratesQ is an AI application inspired by the philosophical method of Socrates: the disciplined examination of ideas through questions. Its conversations draw primarily upon the dialogues of Plato, the writings of Xenophon, and other historical sources concerning Socrates and the early Greek philosophical tradition.
The Socrates you encounter here is a computational reconstruction. He is not the historical Socrates, not a channel to an ancient consciousness, and not a representation of any living or deceased person.
Every effort has been made to preserve the spirit of Socratic inquiry and remain faithful to the surviving historical record. At the same time, any reconstruction necessarily involves interpretation. The conversations you have here should therefore be understood as historically informed philosophical simulations rather than historical documents.
Our aim is simple: to preserve one of humanity's oldest traditions of inquiry in a form accessible to modern readers.
These principles guide both the design of SocratesQ and the conversations it encourages.
Nothing discussed within SocratesQ constitutes medical, psychological, legal, financial, or other professional advice. The conversations are philosophical in nature: exploratory, reflective, and intended to encourage critical thinking rather than provide definitive answers.
If you are experiencing a medical emergency, a mental health crisis, or thoughts of harming yourself or others, do not rely on SocratesQ. As Socrates himself might remind us: some questions belong to philosophers — but others belong to physicians, engineers, judges, or those best equipped to help.
SocratesQ is powered by artificial intelligence. Like any conversation partner — human or artificial — it can misunderstand, oversimplify, overlook important context, or simply be mistaken. Although we strive for historical fidelity and thoughtful dialogue, we make no guarantee that every response is accurate, complete, or appropriate for every situation.
Treat every conversation as an invitation to think critically, not as an authoritative source of fact.
Do not rely on any dialogue generated by SocratesQ when making important medical, legal, financial, educational, or other consequential decisions.
Your conversations belong to you. We do not store your completed conversations. When a dialogue ends, its contents are removed from our systems and are not retained by us.
We do not use your conversations to train AI models. We do not sell your personal information or share it with third parties for advertising purposes.
The personal information we retain is limited to what is reasonably necessary to operate your account, such as your email address and basic account information.
If you choose to save a dialogue as a PDF, that file exists only on your own device. We do not keep a copy.
SocratesQ is intended for users who are at least 18 years of age. By creating an account, you confirm that you meet this requirement.
If you are under 18, please do not use SocratesQ except with the knowledge and consent of a parent or legal guardian, where permitted by applicable law.
SocratesQ was created to foster curiosity, intellectual honesty, and respectful dialogue. By using the service, you agree to use it in that spirit.
Because we do not store or read your conversations, we do not monitor what you discuss with Socrates, and we will not judge or act upon it. You are free to bring any question, however difficult or personal. That freedom is the point.
The one thing that leaves our hands is a conversation you choose to save as a PDF — that file is yours, on your own device. In the spirit of the philosophical dialogue this service is modelled on, we simply hope that you will not use a saved conversation to generate or promote unlawful, abusive, fraudulent, or harmful content, to impersonate others, or otherwise to work against the good faith in which it was offered. We cannot police this, and we do not try to. We only ask it of you.
Socrates himself carries built-in safeguards that operate in the moment a reply is formed — he will decline to help with genuinely dangerous requests. These safeguards require no storage and no review; they happen as the conversation happens, and nothing is kept afterward.
What we can see, and may act upon, has nothing to do with the content of your dialogues: payment fraud, technical abuse of the service, attempts to interfere with its operation or circumvent its safeguards, or fraudulent account activity. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts for such conduct — none of which requires us ever to read a single word you have written to Socrates.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, SocratesQ, The Forum of Minds Society, and their owners, contributors, and affiliates shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages arising from your use of this service, including decisions made in reliance upon AI-generated conversations.
SocratesQ is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, reliability, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.
Your use of the service is entirely at your own discretion and risk.
Payments are handled securely by Stripe; we never see your card details. Membership may be cancelled at any time and remains active through the period already paid.

We may update these Principles and Terms of Use from time to time. When we do, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will change. Continued use of SocratesQ after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
If we make material changes, we will make reasonable efforts to notify registered users.
