What this is

SocratesQ is an AI reconstruction of the philosophical method of Socrates — examining ideas through questions rather than answering them away. Bring him a belief, a doubt, a decision you are circling, and he will do what he did in the Athenian agora: test it, turn it over, follow it to where it leads. Expect to be questioned, not answered.

Socrates wrote nothing. He only asked. Twenty-four centuries later, he is asking again.

A taste of the method

“Should I change careers?”
I’ve been in finance for eleven years. Stable, well-paid, respected. But I feel like I’m slowly disappearing. I think I should leave and do something more meaningful. Should I?
Socrates
Before we decide whether you should leave, I want to understand what you meant when you said you were slowly disappearing. Disappearing from what, exactly? You are still there, presumably, doing the work, collecting the recognition. Yet something is absent. Is it that the work no longer reflects who you are — or that it is actively making you into someone you do not wish to become?
That’s a harder question than I expected. I think both. I used to believe what I was doing mattered. I don’t anymore.
Socrates
That distinction matters enormously. It suggests the problem is not the career itself, but the belief you once carried into it — which has, quietly, changed. What did you once believe, when you believed it mattered, that you no longer believe now?
That growing wealth was a kind of contribution. That efficient markets meant something. I’m not sure I believe that anymore.
Socrates
So the belief that sustained you was philosophical — a conviction about how the world works and where your role fit within it. Is it possible that the belief you are looking for is something you would need to carry with you, rather than something a new kind of work would supply? The conviction that what you do matters — is it in the work, or is it in you?
I don’t know. That’s unsettling.
Socrates
Most honest answers are. You came asking whether to change careers. I wonder if the more urgent question is whether you have examined what you actually believe work is for — because that question will follow you wherever you go.
